LIGHTING BRAND: NICOLE LAWRENCE STUDIO

Nicole Lawrence Studio exists as a study of the graphic form materialised. Drawing on a decade of experience in industrial design and manufacturing, Nicole’s vision is to create unique products that are placed with pride and go the distance.

Offering contemporary furniture and lighting design, Nicole’s projects and commissions are made to order in and around Nicole’s studio in Melbourne, Australia. Allowing the capacity for customisation, clients can collaborate with Nicole directly to ensure the scale, colour and function is perfectly suited to their space.

Nicole Lawrence (b. 1993) is a Melbourne-based designer and maker specialising in furniture and lighting. Balancing structural purpose with artistic freedom, Lawrence draws on her technical expertise from over a decade of working with a myriad of materials and her process-led methodology to create contemporary, collectible pieces.

Lawrence’s studies in Gold & Silversmithing and Industrial Design have allowed for a broad approach and understanding of production techniques – ranging from the ancient to the innovative. Meticulous manipulation of metals transmutes rigidity into fluidity – shaping pieces that beckon interaction, inviting viewers to ponder the equilibrium between strength & delicacy.

Launching her eponymous studio in Melbourne, Australia at the start of 2020 began the journey for Lawrence to develop her practice to include studio collections, exhibition works, creative collaborations and commissions.

HEAVY HAND

This is a body of work sitting in harmony with itself: hard yet soft, rigid yet fluid. Heavy Hand expands a decade-long affection for metal as NLS experiments with press forming, a jewellery forging technique that shapes metals under immense pressure. Through this diligent application, Lawrence has observed the forgiving force of the material and the hand working in tandem.

“For this series, I continue to create functional objects that double as distinct visual artworks by scaling the jewellery technique into lighting pieces adorned with fabrics and pearls. The pieces’ layered materiality draws from my diverse background, technical, design, and artistic knowledge gained from experience across gold and silversmithing, lighting design, and textiles, and a holistic approach to production that considers the object’s entire lifespan. But though practically grounded, my process doesn’t follow a fixed idea but a willingness to combine innovation with ancient methods.

For Heavy Hand, I lean even deeper into this essence. The parabolic pieces embrace a delicacy present within my process, imbued with a masculine-feminine dualism. The imposing forms are dressed with cloth and small pearls, an aesthetic choice determining them as androgynous bodies. Echoing my oeuvre, they possess a free-form oscillation between contemporary and familiar, intimate and bold, pressure and care.

Rather than forces in opposition to each other, the series embodies my desire for the feminine and masculine to come closer together, a joyful balance I hope touches those who encounter this tender series.” – Nicole Lawrence
